Celebrating Punjabi Culture in America

The Punjabi American Heritage Society of Yuba City, California was established in 1993 in order to promote a greater understanding of the Punjabi new generation of Punjabi-Americans and the larger community. Siri Pritam Kaur Khalsa, a founding member and past president of the Punjabi American Heritage Society shares, "we wanted to help our town understand and appreciate the richness and radiance of the Punjabi culture, the talent, and the generosity of this beautiful culture, now transplanted to the hot plains of Yuba City."
The first project they launched was a Teacher Appreciation Evening where they served Punjabi food, children performed traditional dances and they got to know the teachers and staff of the schools in the area.
Recently, the organization hosted their 15th annual Punjabi-American Festival. Siri Pritam Kaur shares:

"By now the yearly Punjabi Festival has become a trademark. Held every year on Memorial Day weekend, it has become bigger than most of us expected and has, for sure, taken on a life of it's own - unstoppable. Artists, dancers, singers, food vendors, they all converge on our town. For one day, we are transported back to the Punjab with music, old friends form near and far, original foods, clothes to die for and more!"
"Sixteen years later, our Society has more members, has expanded, but by no means lost its family feel. Children have grown up, some have moved on to college, new ones are born and added in to the many gatherings we have. We still meet every month, work on new projects, take care of old business, collect funds, energize causes we feel strongly about. We are an extended family, having become so much richer because of this shared journey. As for myself, I am genuinely proud to have been instrumental in founding this society, to have served as president of this vibrant, powerful and respected society."
"We have stayed true to our mission, we served in the best way we could and we used our individual and group resources to meet challenges that came our way. It is my hope and my prayer that the Punjabi/Sikh youth growing up in our community will connect and be nurtured by its roots, by the deep traditions originating from the land of our Gurus - our Gurus who saw the future and laid out the way for us to live happy, health and holy lives. "
