‘Sindhi topi and Ajrak Day’ the culture of Sindh

Sindh, the second largest province of Pakistan according to population, would observe ‘Sindhi Topi and Ajrak Day’ on 19th Nov.Geographically, Sindh has been shaped as large desert region. The Indus and Sindh River passes through the land. Karachi port and Arabian Sea are the assets of the Sindh. The local climate reflects that why Sindhis have different language, folklore, traditions, customs and lifestyle from the other regions in the country According to Archaeologists, Sindhi’s culture is oldest from all other Pakistan’s culture because it belongs to the oldest civilization ‘Mohenjo Darro’. Majority of archaeologists agreed on that Mohenjo Darro is the five years old civilization and known as ‘the father of all civilizations’. ‘Sindhi Topi and Ajrak’ are considered as the symbols of Sindhi’s culture and civilization for thousand of years and Sindhis have an emotional attachment with these symbols. Ajrak, basically, is a name given to unique blockprint shawls. These special shawls display special designs and patterns. Mostly, red, black and yellow colors are used while making these shawls. Ajrak is also very popular among the people of southern Punjab (Seraikis). Sindhi Topi and Ajraks have become the symbols of Sindhi culture. The purpose of celebrating ‘Sindhi Topi and Ajrak Day’ is to promote these cultural symbols and ask people to protect their cultural traditions and their identity. Each Sindhi wear Sindhi topi and Ajrak on this day despite of different cast, color, creed and language.
